About

The Department of Sanskrit (Sahitya) started its journey with introduction of Master of Arts programme with 21 students in 2013 in the temporary campus of Nalbari College. The five year Integrated M.A. in Sanskrit (IMS) programmee was started in 2014 with the enrolment of 19 students under this department. At the initial stage Dr. Kamal Lochan Atreya and Dr. Pranab Jyoti Deka rendered service as contractual teachers where Dr. Kamal Lochan Atreya acted as Course Coordinator of the department of Sanskrit (Sahitya) till October, 2015. Apart from this two, Dr. Basanta Kr. Dev Goswami, Dr. Mani Sarmah and Dr. Goutam Choudhury, Dr. Chabilal Upadhayaya, Dr. Nurima Yeasmin rendered service as Guest Faculty in the department. Dr. Ratul Bujar Baruah joined the department as Associate Professor in 2015 and since October, 2015 he has been serving as Head of the Department till August, 2022. Since August, 2022 Dr. Nibedita Goswami is serving as the Head of the Department. At present, apart from two Associate Professors, there are three Assistant Professors and one Guest Faculty in the department. The department has been trying its level best to fulfill the motto of the University i.e.सरस्वती श्रुतिमहतां महीयताम्’ [May the sayings of the wise be glorified.]

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES:

  • The Department of Sanskrit (Sahitya), along with some other departments, have been jointly organising Sanskrit day celebration (with week-long programme) since 2016 under the auspices of University.
  • The students of the department participate in the Field Study to different places of historical importance every year.
  • Organized a talk programme on ‘Saṁskŗtālaṁkāravaibhavam’ in 2016. The talk was delivered by Prof. Satya Narayan Chakraborty.
  • The Department organised MSRVVP, Ujjain sponsored Three day National Seminar on ‘Vedas: The Source of Oriental Knowledge System’ on 9th-11th Feb, 2017 in cooperation with Sanskrit (Vedic Studies). Dr. K. L. Atreya, Asst. Prof. of Sanskrit Sahitya, acted as convenor of the seminar.
  • The Department takes initiative in organizing Govt. of Assam sponsored All India Sanskrit Conference on ‘Sanskrit: The inexhaustible Source of Knowledge’ on 15th-17th February, 2018. Dr. R. B. Baruah and Dr. K. L. Atreya of the dept. acted as coordinators.
  • The Department organized a one day workshop on Manuscriptology on 30th April, 2019, where Tarun Saikia, Archivist, K. K. Handique Library, Gauhati University and Dhanjit Talukdar, Archival Assistant, K. K. Handique Library, Gauhati University acted as Resource persons.
  • Organized a residential ten day ‘Saṁskṛtabhāṣānuśīlanavarga’ as Nodal department for the benefit of the University students from 20th to 29th June, 2019, in association with Sanskrit Bharati. A SaṁskŗtaSaṁbhāṣaņavarga’was also organised for the teaching staff of the University from 20th to 29th June, 2019, in association with Sanskrit Bharati.
  • The Department acted as Nodal Department to organize a one day symposium on ‘Gandhi in Sanskrit Literature’ on 20th Sept, 2019 to be sponsored by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, wherein Dr. Ratul Bujar Baruah, Head of the department of Sanskrit (Sahitya) has been entrusted with the responsibilities for coordinating the symposium.
  • Department of Sanskrit (Sahitya) organised a special talk under Tattvabodha series on “Manuscripts: Understanding the Cultural Heritage of Assam” on 24th January, 2020 in collaboration with IGNCA, NE Regional Centre.
  • The Department acted as Nodal Department to organise a one day Symposium on “Contribution of North-east to Sanskrit Literature” on 12th March, 2020, sponsored by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhiwherein Dr. Ratul Bujar Baruah, HoD., Department of Sanskrit (Sahitya) was the coordinator.
  • An online lecture series was organized by the department of Sanskrit (Sahitya) in collaboration with IQAC from 10th July, 2020 to 13th July, 2020 on Modern Sanskrit Literature.
  • The Department of Sanskrit (Sahitya) and IQAC of the University organized five day long online workshop on Prayogikavyakaranasiksana from 6th August to 10th August, 2020 for the Sanskrit teachers of provincialised Tols and secondary schools of Assam.
  • The Department of Sanskrit (Sahitya) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the department of Sanskrit, Pragjyotish College, Guwahati on 25th January, 2021 for mutually exchanging academic issues.
  • The department, along with Traditional Sanskrit Department, jointly celebrated the “Gita Jayanti” on14/12/2021.
  • The Department in collaboration with IQAC, organized a one month Workshop on “Sanskrit Grammar” from 1st March to 31st Mach, 2021 for the students of the University.
  • The Department collaborated with IQAC to organize a workshop on “Spoken Sanskrit” for the teaching and Non-Teaching staff of the University from 7th December to 22nd Dcember, 2021.
  • The department, along with Traditional Sanskrit Department, jointly organized a workshop on spoken Sanskrit for the students from 08/12/2021 to 22/12/2021.
  • The department, along with Traditional Sanskrit Department and Sanskrit Vedic Studies Department, jointly organized an Online Pravachanamala on “Srimadbhagavatapurana” from 05/01/2022 to 07/01/2022.
  • The Department in collaboration with IQAC, observed “Kalidasa Jayanti” on 23/11/2022.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:

  • The Department of Sanskrit (Sahitya) organized a ‘Prāyogika-saṁskṛta-śikṣaņa-kāryakrama’ in Pub Batahghila Vidya Mandir High School for 10 days from 13th February to 3rd March, 2020 for the academic uplift of the students of the school.
  • The Department of Sanskrit (Sahitya) organized a ‘Prāyogika-saṁskṛta-śikṣaņa-kāryakrama’ in Uttar Nalbari Vidyapeeth High School for 15 days in the month of May, 2019 for the academic uplift of the students of the school.
  • The department organized an extension programme on Sanskrit Studies in Asom Valley Academy Junior College, Nalbari on 28th November, 2019.
  • The department collaborated Nalbari Sanskrit College in organizing Ten day ‘Saṁskṛta-saṁbhāṣaņa-śibiram’ in December, 2017.

Departmental Library

The Department opened a Book Bank to provide the students a conducive atmosphere for learning. Presently there are 162 books in the library.

Future Plans

  • To visit nearby Secondary Schools under ‘Prāyogika-saṁskṛta-śikṣņa-kāryakrmaḩ’ in order to assist the students in Speaking, Learning and Reading Sanskrit. Already one such programme is launched in Uttar Nalbari Vidyapeeth High School for 15 days in the month of May, 2019.
  • To organise National and International Seminars with a view to contributing to the domain of knowledge.
  • To bring out a periodical Research Journal of the Department.
  • To organise talk programmes for the academic uplift of the students.
  • To organise ‘Saṁskṛtabhāṣāunuśīlanavarga’ in and outside the University Campus.
